Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL and affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders and American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, announce the completion of a trade with the Victoria Salmon Kings for goaltender Riley Gill and the signings of forward Tyler Doig and emergency goaltender Tom Askey. Per team policy, the terms of the contracts will be undisclosed.
Gill's trade to Kalamazoo completes a previous trade with the Salmon Kings that sent forward Rick Cleaver to Victoria.
Currently leading all ECHL goaltenders with a goal against average of 1.33, Gill went 3-0-0, with Victoria and earned his first pro shutout on 10/15/10 against Idaho. Earlier this week, Gill was named the ECHL's Goaltender of the Month for October.
Gill started his pro career last season with the K-Wings after completing his collegiate career with Western Michigan University. Last season with the K-Wings, Gill went 1-0-1 in the regular season with a goals against average of 2.40. In his first pro game, Gill stopped 36 saves to record his first pro win on 03/20/10 against Wheeling.
A four-year standout at WMU, Gill set a career-high starting in 30 contests last season as a senior for the Broncos. Gill ended his tenure at WMU with the highest save percentage (0.915), most shutouts (8) and second-best goals against average (2.94) in school history.
The native of Northfield, Minnesota also holds the single-season school record for save percentage (0.923), set last season.
Gill seems to have a knack for saving his best-performances in the biggest games. Last season, Gill had games of 42 and 47 saves against the Miami University of Ohio (ranked #1), 43 saves versus the University of Michigan, 41 saves in his final home performance against Ferris State (ranked #14) and tied a career-high with 54 saves, second-best in school history, in a victory over Notre Dame.
Last year, Gill was named an alternate to compete in the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Competition, becoming only the fourth Bronco to be selected to participate in the event.
Before heading to college, Gill played three seasons of junior hockey with the Texarkana Bandits of the North American Hockey League.
Doig comes to Kalamazoo after starting the season with Brunico SG (Italy), where the forward recorded 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists) in eight games.
A high-energy and physical forward, Doig led the Charlotte Checkers last season in scoring with 68 points (17 goals, 51 assists), while amassing 142 minutes in penalties.
In his rookie season (2007-08), Doig was selected to represent the Columbia Inferno during the ECHL All-Star Game in Stockton, California.
In each of his three previous seasons as a pro, Doig has spent time in the American Hockey League. Before turning pro, Doig played four seasons of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League mainly with the Guelph Storm. In juniors, Doig was a member of the Storm team that was a Western Conference Playoff Finalists in 2005-06. Tyler was also a member, East Division Regular Season Champions, Belleville Bulls (2006-07).
With Gill not expected to report to Kalamazoo before Sunday, the K-Wings have added Askey, as the team's emergency back-up goaltender.
A 12-year pro, Askey was drafted by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks during the 8th round (186th overall) of the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The native of Tonawanda, New York was a member of 2006-07 Kalamazoo Wings, where the netminder was selected to participate in the 2007 UHL All-Star Classic and helped the K-Wings reached the Colonial Cup Finals. During the 2006-07 season, Askey was a teammate of current K-Wings goaltender Ryan Nie, forward Kory Karlander and head coach Nick Bootland.
In a separate transaction, the K-Wings released goaltender Garrett Zemlak.
