Still Plenty to Play for as Boulders Wrap up Season on Road

Rockland County, NY - The New York Boulders will finish out the regular season on the road this week with a pair of games, Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 8 and Sept 9) in Trois-Rivieres to face Equipe Quebec before wrapping up the 2021 Frontier League season with a three-game weekend set, Friday to Sunday (Sept. 10-12) in Little Falls, NJ against the New Jersey Jackals.
Though the Boulders were eliminated from the Atlantic Division race this past weekend, their two games against Equipe Quebec gives the team a chance to play spoiler as the first-place Quebec team and the second place Tri-City Valley Cats are separated by just a half-game in the standings.
This will be the first time since 2013 that the Boulders will not participate in the post-season, this past weekend's elimination ending a six-season run of playoff action for New York.
Still, there is still plenty to play for over these final five games.
Topping the list is outfielder Jack Sundberg's pursuit of the Boulders' single season stolen base mark. Heading into action on Sept. 8, Sundberg's 47 steals left him tied for the record with Junior Arrojo, who swiped that amount in 2016.
Sundberg is also looking to finish the 2021 season above the .300 BA mark - where he also sits heading into the first game in Trois-Rivieres. His 61 walks this year has him fifth on the Boulders' all-time single season list and is within shot of the record 70 drawn by Jared McDonald back in 2015.
First baseman Ray Hernandez, though he hasn't hit a home run in 24 games - or since Aug. 12 - still sits atop the Frontier League home run leader board with 20 and hopes to add to that total in an attempt to win the crown this season. His lead is now down to one after Denis Phipps of Tri-City blasted his 19th this past weekend at Palisades Credit Union Park.
Additionally, lefthander Dan Wirchansky has recorded 99 strikeouts this season and appears a lock to blow past the century mark. Though it appears highly unlikely that Wirchansky, currently third in the Frontier League in the category, will be able to catch leader Tim Holdgrafer of Evansville, who has 115 Ks on the year, the North Rockland High School is within reach of the Boulders' single season mark of 110 set by David Fischer in 2016.
