CRESTWOOD, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scored the final four runs of Tuesday night's game as they defeated the ThunderBolts 7-4 at Ozinga Field.
Both teams put runs on the board in the first inning. After Gateway (37-53) plated one in the top of the frame, the ThunderBolts (41-51) bounced back with three in the bottom. Payton Robertson singled, stole second and scored on a Dan Robinson base hit. Rob Weissheier followed with an RBI groundout and Peyton Isaacson made it 3-1 with a run-scoring single.
Dustin Woodcock hit a solo home run in the second and Gateway tied the score with one run in the third but Jace Mercer put the ThunderBolts back in front with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Gateway took over from there. They scored two runs in the fifth on an error and a sacrifice fly and led the rest of the way. Alonzo Jones hit an RBI double in the seventh inning and scored on a wild pitch to add some insurance.
The ThunderBolts finished with 13 hits, including three from Mercer, but they left eight runners on base and had four more thrown out on the basepaths. They also committed four errors in a mistake-filled game.
Sam Gardner (5-3) allowed two earned runs in five innings for the win and Bryan Ketchie (2-7) gave up five runs (two earned) in four innings for the loss. Carson Cupo pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
The ThunderBolts continue their final homestand of the year on Wednesday night as they host Grizzlies on Senior and Military Appreciation Night at Ozinga Field. Miguel Ausua (8-5, 5.36) will make his last start of the year for the ThunderBolts against Gateway's Jordan Barrett (4-7, 7.04) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
