Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID-Kids who want to participate in the 22nd annual Saint Alphonsus Classic Children's race can still enter, as registration forms will be accepted through Friday, June 4th. This event for children age six to fourteen - regardless of their athletic ability - will take place on Saturday, June 5th. Idaho Steelheads heads coach John Olver, captain Jeremy Mylymok and mascot Bonk, will start the race.

All registered participants receive a medal, T-shirt and water bottle as they join in the effort to promote healthy lifestyles. The race will start at 11:00 a.m. and scholarships are available for any child unable to pay. The 1.2-mile course begins at a new location - at the Boise Depot - and will finish near the Capitol Building. The new course direction is intended to improve parking and accessibility at the Finish line.

The Classic Children's race is a fun race that encourages children to develop confidence in their own abilities and to develop a life-long interest in exercise. Proceeds from this year's event will support 3 local programs. G.I.F.T. Get Immunized Free on Tuesdays, a free immunization program for children 0-18 years of age; Adventure Island, Idaho's first universally accessible playground to be built in Meridian; and Smile Aide, an organization of clowns trained to serve people of all ages with health care issues are this year's beneficiaries. There will be a "Finish Fair" after the race, complete with food, refreshments, information booths and costumed characters to entertain all at Capitol Park, near the statehouse. Premier Sponsor, Bank of America, and sponsors of the refreshments including TCBY®, Pepsi, Meadow Gold Dairy and Meats Royale, Inc. will also be on hand to support race participants.

Registration forms are available at Saint Alphonsus, local Bank of America branches, YMCAs, area grade schools and TCBY stores, or register online at www.childrensclassic.org. Race packets can be picked-up Friday, June 4 from 10am-7pm at Bronco Elite, 1187 W. River Street. Participants can also drop off any gently used book at the race pick up or on race day; the books benefit Reach Out and Read and other local literacy programs. In preparation for the race, streets will be closed at Bannock Street between 6th and 8th Streets at 9:00 a.m., and Capitol Blvd. and 9th Street at 10:30 a.m.; roads will re-open at approximately 11:45 a.m. For more race information, call (208) 367-4997.
