Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads beat the league-leading Bakersfield Condors tonight, 5-3, before 4,191 fans at the Bank of America Centre. The first goal came on the opening face off at :08, setting a team record for the fastest goal to start a game. The win ends the Condors three-game winning streak and gives Idaho a much-needed victory coming off two consecutive losses at home.
Idaho's offense came alive as Warren Peters and Jonathan Zion picked up three points apiece, and Frank Lukes scored two goals. Bakersfield came on strong in the third, scoring all three of its goals in the final frame, and holding Idaho to only one shot. Idaho's goaltending was also a factor as Bakersfield outshot Idaho 31-21. Steelheads' All-Star goaltender Frank Doyle improves his record to 15-8-2, while the Condors' Randy Petruk falls to 10-5-2.
Idaho came out strong in the first period and tallied four goals. The first at :08 when Jonathan Zion dumped the puck into the Condors end off the opening face off and as goaltender Randy Petruk went to play the puck behind the net, the puck instead took a funny bounce off the boards to the front of the net. Marty Flichel had the wide open net to tap in his fifth goal of the season. Idaho gained a two-goal lead at 4:06 on a Warren Peters backhander. Frank Lukes put away Idaho's third and fourth tallies. The third when he skated the puck down the right side of the boards and beat Petruk high, stick side, and the fourth on the power play after Peters won the face off and got the puck over to Zion who took a shot. Lukes tipped it in at 16:07. The helper was Zion's third on the night.
Idaho scored the lone goal in the second period. Josh St. Louis fed Bobby Russell from the left circle. Russell was parked on the doorstep and beat Petruk at 6:14.
Bakersfield scored quickly in the third period, at the :31 mark from Dennis Shiryaev, then another fast one from Brett Lutes just 1:04 later. Doyle went down to make an anticipated save on a Condor, but he wrapped around the net and got the puck over to Lutes who wristed it over Doyle's sprawling body. Lutes notched a second goal on a shot from the left circle that caught Doyle off guard and caught the low corner of Idaho's net. With :54 seconds left on the clock, Bakersfield pulled its goaltender to add the extra attacker, but Idaho didn't let Bakersfield capitalize.
