North Charleston, SC - The Gators finished their two game swing through South Carolina with a disappointing 3-1 loss to the South Carolina Sting Rays. The Gators playing with only 13 skaters, gave up two third period goals as the Sting Rays league best winning streak extended to eight games.
Just before game time it was determined that both Josh Barker and Chris Heid would not be able to play, leaving Todd Gordon's club with 4 defensemen for the contest. South Carolina applied pressure early, scoring the only goal of the first period at the 8:53 mark. Ed Courtenay pouncing on the puck at the near post and putting it past Nathan Marsters for his 8th of the season. The play started on the far side as Joe Tenute's pass pinballed off three players in front to Courtenay for the easy tap in. Louisiana outshot South Carolina 14-10 in the first 20 minutes.
The Gators tied the game at 5:24 of the 2nd period as Jade Galbraith scored his 8th of the season. After serving a penalty for Doug MacIver, Galbraith came out of the box accepting a pass from Shawn Skiehar. At the right circle, Galbraith fired a wrister into the twine past the blocker of Kirk Daubenspeck to tie the game. Nathan Marsters stopped 18 Sting Rays shots in the period to keep the game at 1-1.
Two defensive mistakes seconds apart lead to the Gators downfall in the 3rd period. Turnovers led to goals by Carlyle Lewis (4) on a wrist shot from the slot at 3:24. Then 32 seconds later Brad Parsons put a rebound past Marsters for the 3-1 final score. It was Parson's first goal as a Sting Ray. With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 16-20-3, 35 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot by South Carolina 47-32. Power plays were 0-7 for the Gators and 0-5 for the Rays. The Gators will take the next three days off as part of the all-star break. The team will hit the ice again on Friday, January 28, when they travel to Estero, Florida, to meet the Florida Everblades at 6:35 pm.
