Sea Wolves Rally Past Grrrowl 5-4 In Shootout

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mississippi Sea Wolves scored three goals in the third period to come-from-behind and send the game to extra time before defeating the Greenville Grrrowl 5-4 in the shootout before 3,927 at the BI-LO Center.

With the win, the Sea Wolves run their win streak to three in a row at the halfway point of the season.

"We did a lot of great things offensively and we found a way," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "We played sloppy at times defensively but we got the job done. We're coming around. It was a character building victory and a nice way to head into the All-Star break."

Mississippi (19-14-3, 41 points) connected the first goal of the game at 8:01 of the opening period. Jay Legault broke in on a 2-on-1 break with Travis Lisabeth, who took the pass and scored his ninth goal of the season beating goaltender Ryan Person, who was making his Greenville debut. Mike Jarmuth also collected an assist.

The best chance for Greenville (18-17-4, 40 points) came midway through the first on the penalty kill. Krys Barch ripped a left circle shot past goaltender Matt Underhill, but it ricocheted off the goalpost and stayed out of the net.

In the second, the Grrrowl knotted the score at 2:50. Kevin Bergin waited patiently in front of Underhill, who made a move and went down, Bergin lifted a shot into the back of the cage for his ninth goal of the campaign. Matt Maglione and the ECHL leading scorer Carl Mallette also garnered a helper for his 50th point of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Greenville went ahead 2-1. Scotty Balan batted the puck out of mid-air at the low right circle to net his third goal of the year. Assists went to Colin Pepperall and Mallette, who registered his second point of the game.

Just eight seconds into the third, the Grrrowl grabbed a two-goal lead. Bergin buried a Mallette rebound shot for his second of the game and make it 3-1 for Greenville.

The Sea Wolves closed the gap to one answering 27 seconds later, as Chris Cava scored on a shot from the point assisted by Jarmuth and Legault.

Jarmuth would register his third point of the night by tallying his seventh goal of the year on a shot from the low left circle to make it 3-3 at the 2:27 mark. John Evangelista and Lucas Drake had the assists.

Greenville went ahead 4-3 on Balan's second marker of the game, which was set up by Vladimir Gusev and Richard Pitirri at 7:32.

But in the dying minutes, the Sea Wolves pulled their goaltender Underhill for the extra attacker. Louis Dumont poked in the tying goal with 1:28 remaining in regulation to tie the score 4-4. The goal for Dumont was his 300th all-time goal in his ECHL career, making him the sixth player in league history to reach the milestone. Lisabeth and Legault set up the tally.

In the shootout Kerry Ellis-Toddington and Jeff Hutchins tallied for Mississippi, while Underhill stopped all four shooters for Greenville including Brock Radunske to end the game in the Sea Wolves favor.

Mississippi failed to score on three power play chances, while Greenville went 0-for-5. Sea Wolves had a season-high 54 shots outshooting the Grrrowl 54-37.

The Sea Wolves upcoming action is at home at 7:35 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday against the Pee Dee Pride at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

On Friday, promotions consist of Military 2-for-1, sponsored by Keesler Federal Credit Union, which offers all military personnel, active or retired, two tickets for the price of one by showing military identification at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office. It's also SeaBee Appreciation Night and St. Martin High School Night with a performance by the St. Martin Yellow Jacket Band.

Promotions for Saturday feature $2 hotdogs and $2 drafts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It's also Pascagoula High School Night with a performance by the Pascagoula Panthers Band, plus the Mardi Gras Parade On Ice will take place in the second intermission and there will also be a Mardi Gras raffle to benefit the Gulf Coast Youth Hockey Association.
