Lynx can't tame Wildcatters
January 22, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Kevin Cooper's two goals led the Texas Wildcatters past the Augusta Lynx on Saturday night in Beaumont, Texas in front of 2,768 fans at Ford Arena.
Texas grabbed the lead at the 10:44 mark of the contest when Kevin Cooper scored his first goal of the night from Dean Stork and Brian Stacey on the power play to make it 1-0. Jamie Johnson would respond for the Lynx at 11:56 from Louis Goulet and Jim Shepherd on a delayed penalty call, slamming home a rebound on Goulet's point shot to end the first period knotted at 1-1.
John Snowden broke the deadlock at the 5:59 mark of the second period, followed by Cooper's second goal of the night to give the Wildcatters the 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes of play.
Augusta knew they needed a momentum swing coming out in the third period, and were able to get just that with a pair of goals starting with Eric Johansson's unassisted power play marker at the 2:51 mark of the period. An unusual bounce out of the corner found the puck in front of the Wildcatters' net, and Johansson slammed the puck off the middle bar for the goal despite protests from Texas that the puck did not go in. The Lynx followed that marker with Sean Connolly's goal at 5:13 of the third from Ken Magowan to tie the contest at 3-3 and put Augusta back in the game. Back and forth action marked the rest of the third period until Andrew Ianero managed to beat Jason Saal, in for Matus Kostur at the start of the third period, with just 2:20 left in the contest to hand Augusta the loss.
Kostur did not end up with a decision, making 28 saves in the contest, while Saal took the loss with eight saves. Phil Osaer earned Texas' seventh win of the year with a 30 save performance. The Lynx and Wildcatters hook back up tomorrow in a matinee match up starting at 6:05 pm EST, with radio coverage on NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630 starting at 5:35 pm.
