November 18, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Steelheads' line of Greg Rallo, Marty Flichel and Derek Nesbitt all picked up two points in the third period, but it wasn't enough, as the Steelheads fell to the Bakersfield Condors, 3-2 at Rabobank Arena on Saturday night.
With the loss the Steelheads stand at 8-2-1-1, remaining in first place in the West Division. The Condors have now won two straight decisions, improving to 7-4-0-1 on the year.
Early in the second period, the Condors cashed in on a five-on-three man advantage to take a 1-0 lead. Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (23 saves) stopped Kevin St. Jacques initial shot, but Brett Lutes flipped the rebound over Silverthorn for his fifth of the season. Sean Venedam also drew an assist.
Through two periods the shots favored the Steelheads, 16-15.
Just 34 seconds into the third period, the Steelheads tied the contest on Rallo's second goal of the campaign. Nesbitt was stopped by Condors' netminder Jamie Hodson (30 saves), but he shoveled the rebound from below the goal line to the crease where Rallo buried it. Flichel extended his season-long scoring streak to 12 games on the goal, as he drew the second assist.
The Condors took their one-goal lead back at 6:45 on St. Jacques fourth of the season. St. Jacques tried to center the puck through the Steelheads slot and it caromed off Steelheads' defenseman Cody Blanshan and back to St. Jacques who rifled it into the back of the net.
Condors' winger Todd Griffith made it 3-1 at 8:50 of the third on a 30-foot wrist shot from the left circles that bounced off Silverthorn's glove and over the goal line. Venedam got the only helper.
Nesbitt got the Steelheads back to within one only 63 seconds later, as Rallo hustled to a loose puck and feathered a pass to the right side where Nesbitt lifted it over Hodson for his seventh tally. Flichel got the second assist.
The Steelheads would get no closer however, as they outshoot the Condors 32-26 in their second regulation loss of the season. The Steelheads had a season-low two power play opportunities, failing on both attempts. The Condors finished one-for-five on the man advantage.
The Condors out-shot the Steelheads nine to five in a scoreless opening period.
The Steelheads continue their five-game road trip with a game against the Fresno Falcons on Sunday, November 19. Faceoff is at 6:00 MST. Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
