Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons improved to 6-0-0 at home with a 3-2 overtime win over the Utah Grizzlies in front of 5,035 fans on Saturday night at Save Mart Center
Utah took a 1-0 lead 4:41 into the first period. Justin Cox gathered in the puck on the near post and snuck a shot past Falcons goaltender Ryan MacDonald for his third goal of the season.
Fresno pulled even just prior to the end of the first period with a power-play goal. Rob McVicar made the save on the Falcons initial shot, but the rebound sat free at the top of the crease. Utah's clearing attempt was kept alive by Colin Shields at the top of the left wing circle, and Shields beat McVicar with a shot over the left shoulder just prior to the buzzer sounding for his fifth goal of the year.
The Falcons took the lead with their second power-play goal of the night 17:55 into the second period. McVicar made the save on Cory Murphy's shot from the blue line, but the rebound sat free at the top of the crease, and Josh Prudden pushed the puck into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Utah tied the game at 2 at the 14:27 mark of the third period. Brad Herauf won a face-off in the left wing circle, and the puck found its way to Ian Forbes at the center point. The Grizzlies' defenseman beat MacDonald with a long range slap shot for his first goal of the season.
The Grizzlies had a 5-on-3 power play late in regulation, but were unable to convert, sending the game to overtime.
Dustin VanBallegooie recorded the game-winning goal at 3:40 of overtime. Luke Curtin dropped a perfect pass for VanBalliegooie who skated to the left wing circle and snapped a wrist shot over McVicar's glove for his third goal of the season.
