Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton,OH-The Dayton Bombers were defeated by the Johnstown Chiefs 3-1 at the EJ Nutter Center in Dayton on Saturday night.
The Bombers and the Chiefs met for the first time this season on Saturday and early it was clear that both teams were trying to feel each other out in the fist period. After the Bombers put up a season high 37 shots on goal in Cincinnati Thursday night, they were only able to generate six shots in the first period of this one and both teams were scoreless after one period of play.
In the second, Johnstown struck first on a goal by Maxime Boisclair at the 1:02 mark of the second period. Johnstown then increased their lead as Randy Rowe made it 2-0 on the power play. But the Bombers cut the lead in half less than five minutes later.
Dan Baum picked up a lose puck in front of Chiefs starter Gerald Coleman for his second goal of the season, assists to Paul Kelly (5) and Trevor Hendrikx (2) at the 14:16 mark of the second period to make it 2-1. That lead would stand up for the Chiefs, as the Bombers found themselves trailing after 40 minutes for only the third time this year.
Dayton could feel the momentum near the end of the second period and were trying to carry that momentum into the third as well. But Johnstown pushed the lead back to two within the first: 25 seconds of the third period. Doug Andress was the benefactor of a crazy bounce near Bombers starter Adam Berkhoel and lifted into the back of the net to make it 3-1. Although the Bombers out shot the Chiefs 11-4 in the third period, it was just not enough on the night and the Chiefs held on for a 3-1 road victory.
The Bombers out shot the Chiefs 24-21, but Coleman was the difference in the game making key save after key save. Dayton is now 4-4-0 on the season; they have out shot every opponent in those eight games.
The Bombers return home for their first match up of the season with the Reading Royals on Wednesday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the EJ Nutter Center.
