Idaho Steelheads News Release
San Diego, California - Steelheads' forward Marty Flichel tied the game with 64 seconds remaining in regulation, but Pierre-Luc Sleigher won the game in overtime for the host San Diego Gulls, as the Steelheads fell 3-2 at the iPayOne Center on Saturday.
The Steelheads (41-21-8) lost their fourth straight game in overtime (1-4), while the Gulls won their third straight game overall and their sixth consecutive match on home ice. However, the Steelheads pick up a point for the overtime loss to remain unbeaten in their last three contests.
There was no scoring in the first period, as the Steelheads out-shot San Diego, 13-8.
The Gulls broke the ice late in the second period on the power play. Rookie Conrad Martin, playing in his first professional game, banged home a rebound for his first career goal at 15:48 of the frame. Steelheads' goaltender Matt Yeats (21 saves) made the initial save off Steve Hildenbrand's shot from the right circles, but Martin was left alone in the slot. Jonathon Shockey also drew an assist on the goal.
After two periods of play, the Steelheads had a 24-14 advantage in shots, but the Gulls led 1-0.
The home team made the score 2-0 at the 1:58 mark of the third period on a power play goal by Kelly Askew. Nikita Korovkin and Shockey got the assists, as Askew tipped Korovkin's shot past Yeats.
At 4:47 of the third period, David Bararuk got the Steelheads on the board with his 24th of the season. Bararuk tried to pass the puck to the far circles and a Gulls' penalty killer redirected the puck past a stunned Mike Mole (35 saves). Bararuk's goal extended his scoring streak to a season-high and team-high, 10 games. Flichel got an assist on the goal, which extended his scoring streak to seven games.
After Flichel tallied, the rest of regulation went without a tally, before Sleigher won the game halfway through overtime.
The final shots were 37-24 in favor of the Steelheads, as they drop to 1-3-1 against the Gulls this season.
The Steelheads return to action on Sunday, April 2, as they play game two of their three-game series versus the San Diego Gulls. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
