Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Joel Irving and Kevin Truelson each recorded multiple-point games to lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 3-1 win over the Phoenix RoadRunners before 5,381 at Rabobank Arena in ECHL action Saturday
Following a scoreless first period, Bakersfield (37-25-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals in the middle frame. Kevin Truelson found a wide-open Joel Irving at the left-wing circle, and Irving fired a wrist shot through the pads of RoadRunners goaltender Ryan Cyr at 13:08 to give the Condors a 1-0 lead. Dave Bonk extended the lead to 2-0 when he collected the loose puck inside the right-wing circle and falling to his knees put a backhand shot through Cyr at 16:04 for the tally.
The RoadRunners (19-45-5) would finally break through in the third period. On a nice individual move, Brad Woods worked his way around the Bakersfield defense and fired a shot on Condors goaltender Ryan Munce. Munce couldn't hang on to the rebound and Mike Ouellet slammed it into the open net at 8:33 to cut the deficit to 2-1. But the Condors would have the final answer as Kevin St. Jacques found Brad Mehalko in the high slot, and Mehalko ripped a shot over Cyr's right shoulder and into the net at 14:39 to cap the scoring.
Phoenix out-shot Bakersfield 34-32. Cyr made 29 saves but fell to 0-12-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-3 on the power play while Bakersfield was 2-9 with the man-advantage.
Notes: The RoadRunners finished 1-6-0 against Bakersfield in their inaugural regular season series...Former Phoenix Mustang Kevin St. Jacques is now just two points shy of 1,000 for his professional career. St. Jacques teamed up with current Condors Head Coach Marty Raymond to lead the Mustangs to the West Coast Hockey League Taylor Cup in 2000 the only professional hockey championship in Phoenix hockey history...Bakersfield did not allow a power play goal for a season-high fifth straight game.
