Aces grab point in 4-3 OT loss to Victoria

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Lanny Gare banked a shot off the back of Alaska defenseman Peter Metcalf's left leg with 12.9 seconds left in overtime, completing a bizarre Friday night in which Victoria emerged with a 4-3 victory before a sell-out crowd of 6,451 at Sullivan Arena.

For the fourth straight game, Alaska surrendered the opening goal, as Josh Garbutt notched the first of his brief (six games) pro career at 11:47 of the first period. Five minutes later, Steve Roberts scored off the rush, and Victoria carried a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.

The Aces dominated the final two periods, out-shooting the Salmon Kings 42-15 and finally getting on the board against Victoria starter Rob McVicar when Alex Leavitt redirected a Louis Mass drive from the point with 6:51 left in the second period. Kimbi Daniels tied the game just 63 seconds into the final frame when his floater caromed off the back of ‘Kings defenseman Brad Cook's ankle and trickled by McVicar, but Adam Taylor stuffed home a rebound to push Victoria back in front at 3-2 with 17:24 remaining.

John DeCaro, making his first professional start for Alaska just three weeks after completing his collegiate career at UAA, stopped 24 of 28 shots, including a key denial of a Gare breakaway late in the third period that might have sealed the game for the visitors. With 2:01 to play, Leavitt tied the game with his second goal of the night, and 23rd of the year, which came from an impossible angle and off another deflection, this time off the back of McVicar himself. The ensuing loss in overtime kept the Aces winless in their last five games (0-2-3), but Alaska, 49-11-7 overall, still has not lost consecutive games in regulation and moved to within one point of West Division-leading Las Vegas, which lost 3-1 at home to San Diego and has only three games left on its schedule.

The Aces, who have give games remaining, play their final regular season game at home tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. against the Salmon Kings (25-35-9), who have lost just one of their last nine games. Alaska can tie the all-time ECHL record for most home wins in a single season with a win tomorrow night, which would be its 30th against four regulation defeats and two overtime losses. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all home games and selected road contests also are available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.
