'Blades ink rookie Bannan to contract

ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president & general manager Craig Brush along with head coach Gerry Fleming announced today that defenseman Matt Bannan has been signed to a contract.

The 25-year-old joins the Everblades after completing his fourth season the University of Western Ontario. During the 2005-06 season the native of Toronto notched four goals and 16 points in 24 games, with three of his four goals coming on the power play. Bannan, who was named to the CIS Men's Hockey All-Canadian squad earlier this week, tallied 41 points (9g, 32a) in 87 career games with the Mustangs. A two-time CIS All-Star, the 5-foot-10 defenseman served as an assistant captain on the Western Ontario squad.

Prior to skating at the collegiate ranks, Bannan spent three seasons at the junior level in the Ontario Hockey League with the Toronto St. Michaels Majors and the Sarnia Sting. With Toronto from 1999-02, Bannan collected 77points in 130 games before finishing the 2001-02 season with 33 points in 56 games with Sarnia. Before beginning his junior career Bannan helped score a gold medal for the Ontario team in the World Under-17 Hockey Championships. Bannan will be in an Everblades uniform for their game vs. Greenville tonight.

The Everblades return to action on tonight when they host the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena. Tonight is "Fan Appreciation Night!" Tonight is also the final locally televised game on UPN-8.
