Another Pair Of College Player Signed; Askew Activated

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced Saturday the signings of rookie defensemen Jeff Winchester and Conrad Martin. Both will be available to play Saturday, as the Gulls get set to host the Idaho Steelheads. Meanwhile, Kelly Askew was activated from the injured list and Dennis Shiryaev was placed on the seven day I-R.

Winchester, 24, joins the Gulls after completing his senior year this season at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. In 34 games he notched 13 assists and 58 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3-inch, 220-pounder from Dalhousie, New Brunswick played 108 games in four years at Alabama-Huntsville, recording 45 points (4g, 41a) and 273 penalty minutes. He was named a College Hockey American second team All-Star following his junior year (2004-05), as his 21 points ranked second among conference defenseman.

The 23-year-old Martin turns pro after playing the last four years at Mercyhurst College. In 18 games this season, he recorded 10 points (1g, 9a) and 39 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1-inch, 215-pounder from Toronto played 125 games in four years at Mercyhurst, notching 46 points (8g, 38a) and 267 penalty minutes. He was named the Atlantic Hockey's Best Defensive Defenseman and selected to the All-Academic Team his junior year (2004-05).

Askew has seven points (4g, 3a) and 21 penalty minutes in nine games for San Diego this season. He's missed the last seven games and, prior to this stint on the injury list, Askew missed 21 games with a broken ankle. Shiryaev, who the Gulls acquired from the Bakersfield Condors in late February, was put on the injured list with a sore knee. In 41 games split between San Diego and Bakersfield this season, he has nine points (4g, 5a) and 160 penalty minutes.
