Four of a Kind for Victoria

April 1, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Alaska Aces are fighting for top spot in the ECHL and the Victoria Salmon Kings are trying to extend their road win streak. In front of a sell out crowd of 6,451 in Anchorage, Victoria Goaltender Rob McVicar had the hot hand to make 53 saves, and help trump the Aces 4-3 in Overtime.

Victoria opened the scoring at 11:47 in the first when recent acquisition Josh Garbutt scored his first ECHL goal. Garbutt snagged a rebound from a shot by Defenseman Ryan Thrussell and chipped it past Goaltender John Decaro to silence the sellout crowd.

Steve Roberts added another Victoria goal for the 2-0 lead at 16:34 in the first. Nate Forster fed Roberts on the left circle, and he slapped a one-timer to the far-side top-corner for his 13th goal of the season.

Alaska crept within when ECHL leading scorer Alex Leavitt redirected a shot by Louis Mass, from 15 feet in front of the net, at 13:09 in the second period.

Victoria held the 2-1 lead heading into the third period, but the Aces tied the score at 1:03. Forward Kimbi Daniels took a lofty shot towards McVicar and it deflected off a Salmon Kings defender for the goal.

Just 1:33 later (at 2:36 in the third), Adam Taylor scored his 55th point of the season. After a 3-on-2 charge, Taylor poked in a second effort rebound by Seth Leonard on the blocker side of Decaro, and gave the Salmon Kings the 3-2 lead.

With 2:01 left in the final period of regulation, Leavitt scored his second goal of the match and forced an overtime period. Leavitt banked a shot of McVicar from a difficult angle on the right side of the net.

In Overtime, Adam Taylor rallied a pass to Lanny Gare, whose second effort gave Victoria their second consecutive win on Alaska ice this season. The winning goal was scored with just 13 seconds left in the extra period.

Victoria was 0-3 on the power play, and Fresno was 1-5 with the man advantage. McVicar earned his 13th win of the season, and Decaro was handed his second OT loss. Alaska doubled Victoria in shots, 56-28.

The Salmon Kings hold the deck for game two versus the Alaska Aces Saturday night starting at 8:15 p.m. (PT), and then head home for the final two games of the season versus the Utah Grizzlies.
