-SPIKES START SERIES AGAINST MUCKDOGS: The State College Spikes face another Pinckney Division postseason contender as they take on the Batavia Muckdogs in the first game of a two-game mini-series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes are currently tied with Jamestown for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead, with Batavia three games back. The Spikes are in the NYPL Wild Card lead (along with Jamestown) by a half-game over Lowell as well. State College is 37-41 all-time against Batavia, with a 20-19 mark in home games. The Spikes and Muckdogs have split their 2013 season series so far, 4-4.
-LAST GAME: Home runs by Matthew Young, who turned 23 on Saturday, and Alex De Leon helped the Spikes take a four-run lead into the ninth, but they had to avert a desperation rally by the Jamestown Jammers to take a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at Russell Diethrick Park and tie the Jammers for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead. Jamestown scored two runs and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth before Cesar Valera executed a lineout double play to end the game. Starter Nick Petree sparkled on the mound for State College, earning the win with six innings of one-run ball. Andrew Pierce finished the game for the Spikes in relief to get the save.
-REED MAKES THE START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Jimmy Reed goes to the mound for State College tonight. Reed is making his seventh start and tenth overall appearance for State College this season. Last time out, the Cardinals' 2013 sixth-round draft choice gave up a career-high five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk over four innings at Brooklyn on Sunday. Reed is 1-0 with a save and a 1.64 ERA at home in three outings this season. The Maryland product also holds a 30-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year.
-MUCKDOGS GIVE NEWELL THE CALL FOR MOUND: Right-hander Ryan Newell makes the start tonight for Batavia. Newell is making his 11th start for the Muckdogs this season. Newell has not yet faced the Spikes this season, but did make an appearance for Jamestown against State College in the second game of a doubleheader on August 30 of last season. The Fairfax, VA native threw eight-plus no-hit, no-run innings against Aberdeen this past Sunday before allowing a single to the first batter of the ninth.
-RAMOS, BOSCO SHINE AT NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Spikes Steven Ramos and Jimmy Bosco were the only players to collect multiple hits in the 2013 NYPL All-Star Game Tuesday night, but the AL beat the Spikes' NL side, 4-3, in the Midsummer Classic. Ramos and Bosco each went 2-for-2, with Bosco producing a double. David Washington also started for the NL squad at first base, while Cesar Valera entered the game in the sixth inning at shortstop. Outfielder Ronald Castillo had been named to start, but did not appear in the game.
-SPIKE MARKS: Steven Ramos leads the NYPL in batting by 17 points over Jamestown's Adam Frazier (.355 to .338)...David Washington leads the NYPL in RBI with 37...Washington is also tied for third in homers with eight, and is tied for the Spikes' record for single-season home runs...The Spikes are 15-5 over their last 20 games and have come back from being down five games in the division on July 30
