Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
LOWELL, MA (August 18, 2013) - The Renegades can take a few things away from their final two games in Lowell: five hits just isn't enough, and the Spinners have a flair for the dramatic. With the game tied at three over the final five frames, Lowell eventually capitalized on Hudson Valley's inability to get a runner aboard after the fourth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Moore led off with a walk and displayed phenomenal speed after scoring the game-winning run from first on a walkoff double by Miguel Rodriguez. Once again, the 'Gades just couldn't come up with enough answers, and it won't get any easier when they open a two game series on Monday night against the division leading Aberdeen IronBirds.
For the second time in three days, Hudson Valley got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a solo home run from Johnny Field off lefty starter Daniel McGrath. But after being retired in order by Derek Loera in the bottom of the first, the Spinners had a big second inning. Two straight singles with one out by Deiner Lopez and Carlos Asuaje brought up Nick Moore, who grounded into a force out at second to keep the inning going with runners at the corners. Williams Jerez tied the game with an RBI double to right before Rodriguez delivered his first big hit with a two-run single to make it 3-1.
The Renegades got a run back in the third after Julian Morillo continued his strong series with a leadoff single to left. With one out, Ariel Soriano singled back to McGrath, who still tried getting an out but threw the ball away to advance the runners to second and third. Darryl George extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI single to center that cut the deficit to 3-2. But the 'Gades would not score for the rest of the inning as McGrath pitched out of the jam.
However, he would not be as fortunate in the fourth, and Hudson Valley would tie the score at three. After Granden Goetzman opened the inning with a double to left, he stole third base with James Harris at the plate. The center fielder got under a fly ball to right that was deep enough for Goetzman to tag up and score the tying run.
Making his first start of the year, Loera did not allow a run over his final three innings despite putting a runner at third in the third and fourth with less than two outs. He closed out his day with a perfect fifth, and gave the ball to sturdy long reliever Eli Echarry for the final four innings.
Echarry's only hiccup came in his first inning of work in the sixth, when he allowed two straight singles to Lopez and Asuaje to open the frame. After getting the next two outs, he threw a wild pitch to push the runners to second and third. Rodriguez would not come through this time, and his fly ball to right ended the inning. Both teams went in order from the start of the seventh until the bottom of the ninth. Echarry's leadoff walk to Moore came before a strikeout by Jerez. Rodriguez, the Spinners number nine hitter, brought in his third run of the game with the game-winning double to left that completed the sweep.
NOTES: The loss marks the fifth time the Renegades have been swept in a series this season, although one was shortened because of a rainout in Batavia that postponed the final game on August 8...Goetzman now has a hit in four straight games and is 15-for-17 on stolen bases...Field's second home run of the year was his first since June 26...Echarry (5-3) struck out six in 3.1 innings of work.
The Renegades remain on the road and will open up a brief two game series in Aberdeen on Monday night. Jaime Schultz (1-1, 3.26 ERA) will try and stop the losing streak against talented righthander Sebastian Vader (5-3, 2.58 ERA) at 7:05 PM. Hudson Valley returns to Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday, August 21 to start a new two game series against the IronBirds. Great seats are still available for any of the five games on that homestand, so call 845-838-0094 or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
