Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY- Despite some late-inning drama of their own, the Tri-City ValleyCats dropped the series finale of a three-game set against the Staten Island Yankees on Sunday, as Eric Jagielo's home run in extras ended a 3-2 affair.
With one out in the eleventh, Jagielo stepped up to the plate against 'Cats reliever Tyler Brunnemann. Already with three hits in the game, Jagielo connected for his third homer of the season, salvaging the final game of a series in which the ValleyCats won the first two games.
For the 'Cats, the road trip ended on a sour note with the loss. However, in the top of the ninth inning, Michael Martinez provided dramatics with a two-run, game-tying homer with one out. The clutch longball from Martinez, his eleventh of the season, vaulted him into a tie for the league lead in home runs with Williamsport's Zach Green.
The ValleyCats managed only five hits in the extra-inning battle on Sunday, but had a chance in the top of the eleventh to take the lead. With one out, Tyler White reached on an error, and Conrad Gregor walked. However, Martinez failed to re-create his timely performance by flying out. Jack Mayfield then popped out to end the frame.
As it was over the course of the road trip, pitching was very strong for the 'Cats in their defeat. Kevin Comer had his best outing of late, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Evan Grills relieved him, and threw four innings of two-run ball, but was in line to take the loss before the 'Cats tied it up in the ninth.
Gonzalo Sanudo continued to pitch well out of the Tri-City 'pen. In his second appearance with the team, the right-hander pitched a perfect 1.2 innings, in his first outing since recording a save Thursday in Connecticut.
Lowell won on Sunday, closing the gap in the Stedler Division on Tri-City to just half a game. The 'Cats will return home on Monday for the start of a two-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. The first 1, 500 fans in attendance will receive a bobblehead of CBS 6 anchor Greg Floyd, as well as one of Hannah of "Hannah's Hope Fund." Tickets can be purchased by calling the stadium box office at 518-629-2287.
