Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BROOKLYN, NY --- The Lake Monsters scored three times in the top of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead, but the Brooklyn Cyclones scored three runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning and held on to beat Vermont 6-4 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at MCU Park.

The Lake Monsters trailed 3-1 in the eighth when Boog Powell and B.J. Boyd led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Back-to-back one-out walks forced home Powell with the first run of the inning before Vermont took the 4-3 lead as Boyd scored on a Tyler Marincov sacrifice fly and Ryan Huck scored on a throwing error to the plate by rightfielder James Roche.

Sam Bragg, who had allowed just one earned run on 10 hits over 17 2/3 innings in his first 11 appearances for the Lake Monsters, came on to pitch in the bottom of the eighth and gave up three straight singles to load the bases. After a wild pitch tied the game, Bragg allowed a Matt Oberste sacrifice fly and Colton Plaia RBI single for a 6-4 Brooklyn lead.

The Cyclones had two more singles in the inning off Bragg (0-2), but were unable to score as Powell threw out Plaia at the plate on a two-out Gavin Cecchini single to center. It was the second straight inning that Powell had thrown out a runner at the plate to end the inning.

Powell was 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Ryan Gorton was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the second inning that gave Vermont a 1-0 lead.

Starter Brent Powers allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts over five innings, while Fernand Cruzado tossed two scoreless innings of relief.

Jared King went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Patrick Biondi and Plaia both had two hits for the Cyclones. Mazzilli, son of former Major Leaguer Lee Mazzilli, was 2-for-4 with one run, one double and one RBI. Starter Robert Gsellman allowed one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts over seven innings, while Juan Urbina (1-1) struckout two over the final 1 1/3 for the victory.

The Lake Monsters got their run off Brooklyn starter Miller Diaz (4-3), who allowed five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings to take the loss. Gavin Cecchini collected four of his team's seven hits in going 4-for-4 for the Cyclones (28-28), who were shutout for the seventh time this season.

Vermont (28-31) has won two of the first five games on its current seven-game roadtrip. The Lake Monsters head to Tri-City for the final two games of the roadtrip Monday and Tuesday against the ValleyCats (both games will be broadcast on 960am "The Zone"). Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday to begin a five-game homestand through Sunday.
