Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY- The ValleyCats have had their ups and downs all season long, going through numerous stretches of wins and losses including a nine-game losing streak at the end of July into the beginning of August. Since then, they have hit their stride. Beginning when they broke the losing streak on August 4, the 'Cats have won nine out of their last eleven games, outscoring their opponents 75-35. On Saturday night in Staten Island, the ValleyCats (35-23) defeated the Yankees by a final score of 6-3, their third victory in a row.

Kyle Westwood got the start for the 'Cats, but only pitched 2 2/3 innings as he works his way back from a minor injury. Westwood allowed only one hit while striking out three batters and walking one. Troy Scribner would enter the ballgame in the third inning, and pitched through the eighth to earn his first win as a member of the ValleyCats. In his 5 1/3 innings of work, Scribner (1-1) only allowed one earned run on four hits, while striking out eight batters and walking one. The lone run allowed was on a homerun to Yankees first round draft selection Eric Jagielo in the bottom of the 6th inning.

The 'Cats had a 6-1 advantage going into the ninth inning, but things would get interesting once Charles Basford came on to relieve Scribner. Basford, who began the season with Staten Island, was acquired by the Houston Astros in a trade for Fernando Martinez. Basford walked the first batter he faced in Yeicok Calderon, then gave up a triple to Brandon Thomas that scored Calderon. After a strikeout, Basford would then give up a double to Hector Crespo, which would end his night.

Tyler Brunnemann came on for the 'Cats and proceeded to strike out the final two batters of the game to preserve the victory for Scribner, and pick up his first save as a 'Cat.

The ValleyCats got on the board in the second inning after a lead-off walk to Ronnie Mitchell, the next batter Jon Kemmer doubled to center to score Mitchell and give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. Chan Moon would then reach on a fielder's choice, but Kemmer would score after Yankees second baseman Hector Crespo committed a throwing error, and the 'Cats then had a 2-0 advantage.

The 'Cats wouldn't score again until the seventh inning, but would put up four runs in that inning. Kemmer and Moon led off the inning with back-to-back walks, and following a Ryan Dineen ground out, Ramsay walked to load the bases for the 'Cats. Tyler White then came through with a clutch single to left, scoring Kemmer and Moon. During the next at-bat with Conrad Gregor at the plate, a wild pitch would allow Ramsay to score making it 5-1 in favor of the 'Cats. The next batter, Michael Martinez reached on another fielding error by the Yankees, their fourth of the game, allowing White to score the final ValleyCats run and make it 6-1.

With the victory, the ValleyCats maintained a 1.5 game lead over the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division, with only 18 games left to play during the regular season. The 'Cats will look to sweep the series with the Yankees on Sunday in Staten Island, as they will send RHP Kevin Comer (2-4 5.19) to the mound against Yankees LHP Conner Kendrick (1-2 3.52). Game time is set for 4:00pm. Following the game, the 'Cats return to "The Joe" for a short two-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters beginning on Monday night.
