Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Sunday was Miguel Rodriguez's day at LeLacheur Park as he gave the Lowell Spinners an early lead and sent everyone home happy with a walk-off RBI double to give the Spinners a 4-3 win and a series sweep of the Hudson Valley Renegades.
The win, at least temporarily, moves the Spinners into a share of the Wild Card lead, tying them with Jamestown and State College who entered the game tied atop the Pinckney Division.
Hudson Valley (27-31) became the first team in over a week to solve Daniel McGrath, coming of 7.1 hitless innings over his last two appearances. After two outs, Johnny Field took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (33-23) took the lead in the second inning. Back-to-back one out singled by Deiner Lopez and Carlos Asuaje led to runs on an RBI double by Williams Jerez and a two-run single by Rodriguez, taking a 3-1 lead.
The Renegades pulled within a run in the third after a lead-off single by Julian Morillo. A one out single by Ariel Soriano combined with a throwing error by Daniel McGrath put runners on second and third and a Darryl George single brought home Morillo to cut the lead to 3-2.
Hudson Valley would pull even in the fourth after a leadoff double by Granden Goetzman got the inning started. After Goetzman stole third, a deep fly to right by James Harris brought him in to knot the score at three.
The score would remain there after the Spinners stranded men at second and third in both the fourth and sixth innings without plating a run. Meanwhile, the duo of Taylor Grover and Carlos Pinales combined on five hitless innings of relief, striking out a pair to set the stage for the second walk-off of the homestand.
After Moore led off the ninth with a walk, Jerez failed to get the bunt down and struck out swinging. That brought Rodriguez to the plate and he doubled off the metroPCS sign in left field to score Moore from first and give the Spinners the three game sweep.
Four Spinners had two hit games, led by Rodriguez, who entered the game batting just .063, who added three RBI. Lopez, Asuaje and Jerez also had two hit nights in the 10 hit Spinners attack.
McGrath went the first four innings, pitching in and out of trouble, allowing five hits and two walks, striking out three. Grover followed with two innings of relief, striking out one, while Pinales (2-0, 2.53) was perfect in nabbing the win.
The Spinners look to make it four in a row when they welcome the Connecticut Tigers into town Monday evening for a 7:05 first pitch. It's Cooler Bag Giveaway Night, sponsored by Coors Light, and Teddy Stankiewicz (0-0, 1.00) is on the bump for the Spinners.
