Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas - The Texas Stars scored three goals in the span of 2:33 of the second period as they beat the Toronto Marlies 5-2 Saturday night in front of 5,437 fans at Cedar Park Center.
Stars right wing Brett Richie opened the scoring late in the first period finding a rebound off a Cameron Gaunce shot and depositing the puck into the open net at 14:51. Ritchie's fourth goal of the season, assisted by Gaunce and Scott Glennie, triggered the annual Teddy Bear Toss that saw almost 1,100 stuffed animals shower onto the ice.
Just 31 seconds into the second Toronto tied the game with a pass from behind the net by Greg McKegg found Spencer Abbott for a one-timer just above the crease. Marlies defenseman Andrew MacWilliams' cross checking penalty would put the Stars on the power play and Curtis McKenzie would find the net just seven seconds later, blasting home a one-timer from Travis Morin and Maxime Fortunus. A mere 27 seconds after McKenzie's goal, Chris Mueller upped the lead to three, redirecting a Jyrki Jokipakka shot into the net from the right side of the crease. Ritchie also assisted on the goal, giving him a two- point game. Stars center Travis Morin then earned his 11th goal this season, tipping-in Gaunce's shot from the point at 9:41 to make it three Texas goals in the span of 2:33. Toronto would pull one back on a goal by Carter Ashton, who drove down the right wing and beat Texas goaltender Allen York with a backhand inside the far post at 16:10.
The Stars continued to put pressure on Marlies netminder Drew MacIntyre during the third stanza, outshooting Toronto 16-9. Left wing Mike Hedden sealed the victory as he took a beautiful pass from Justin Dowling and then beat MacIntyre one-on-one and slid his backhand around the fallen goalie and off the inside of the right post at 16:56. Allen York improved his record to 3-0-2 on the season, stopping 24-of-26 shots in goal for Texas. Drew MacIntyre took the loss for Toronto, allowing five goals on 43 shots. The Stars out-shot the Marlies 43-26 and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Toronto finished 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday, November 27th as they host the Oklahoma City Barons for another Winning Wednesday presented by H-E-B.
