Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins exploded for five goals in the third period to down the St. John's IceCaps, 5-2, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza and gain a split in the two-game weekend series.
The IceCaps controlled the first forty minutes and enjoyed a hefty 26-9 shot advantage, thanks in part to seven man-advantages, but only led by a score of 1-0 going into the second intermission.
Tom Kostopoulos' power play goal 5:20 into the third got the ball rolling for the Penguins. The Pens' captain dug a puck out of a scramble in front and roofed a shot over IceCaps goalie Eddie Pasquale to knot the score.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton needed only 29 seconds to go up, 2-1, when Adam Payerl freed the puck behind the net and threw a pass into the slot. Several Wilkes-Barre/Scranton players got a whack at it before Bobby Farnham deposited his first goal of the season.
While on their eighth power play of the game, the IceCaps were able to pull even at 13:57 of the third. Eric Hartzell, making his AHL debut in net for the Penguins, got a blocker on Carl Klingberg's shot, but Eric O'Dell swatted the rebound out of the air and across the goal line for his second of the game.
Three minutes later, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton broke the game open with goals 17 seconds apart. The Penguins went back on the man-advantage and edged ahead, 3-2, with Andrew Ebbett firing a wrist shot from the far circle that got through a screen and the pads of Pasquale.
On the next shift, Zach Sill potted his second goal of the year to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton some breathing room with 3:06 left in regulation.
Jayson Megna capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal and extended his point streak to five games.
Neither squad was able to find the back of the net until the midway point of the second period when O'Dell was able to bang in the rebound on the power play at 10:08 for a 1-0 IceCaps lead.
Hartzell stopped 29-of-31 shots to gather his first AHL victory. Pasquale made 14 saves on 18 shots for St. John's
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hit the road on Wednesday, Nov. 27 to take on the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:00 p.m. Catch the game on the Sports Hub 102 or on AHL Live.
