Barons split in Lake Erie after 5-3 Friday loss

Andrew Agozzino had two goals while Joey Hishon had a goal and two assists to lead the Lake Erie Monsters to a 5-3 win over the Oklahoma City Barons on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Barons never led, but tied the score 2-2 in the second period and 3-3 in the third in falling to 1-2-0-0 on this five-game road trip and 8-9-0-2 on the season. Oklahoma City gains a split against the Monsters after routing them 6-1 on Thursday.

The Monsters improved to 9-7-0-1 and were opportunistic offensively, capitalizing with five goals on 23 shots. Their final goal, by Agozzino, was into an empty net with two seconds remaining.

Lake Erie goaltender Sami Aittokallio (4-2-0 this season) improves to 3-0-0 in his career against the Barons. Laurent Brossoit, starting for the second straight game, drops to 1-2-0 this season in the AHL.

Oklahoma City mustered just two shots in the third period, one of which went in, but out-shot the Monsters 28-23 for the game. For the fourth straight game, the Barons did not score in the first period, but on Friday out-shot the Monsters 17-9 in the opening 20 minutes.

Agozzino opened the scoring on the power play at 4:53 from the doorstep. Stephan Elliott made it 2-0 with a stick-side snap shot from the left side of the slot at 10:19.

The Barons scored twice in the second to tie the score. Anton Lander, who scored twice on Friday, lit the lamp on a power play from Ryan Hamilton and Linus Omark at 9:41 from the slot. Brad Hunt beat Aittokallio glove side soon after a faceoff at 10:58, with assists by Martin Marincin and C.J. Stretch.

Lake Erie took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission on goal by Joey Hishon on a 2-on-1, converting a centering pass from Garrett Meurs, at 16:59.

Oklahoma City tied the score 3-3 at 8:20 of the third on a backhander by Lander, his seventh goal of the season, at 8:20.

Meurs had the winner at 14:42, moving in front unchecked and tucking a backhander into the upper part of the net.

Oklahoma went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Lake Erie was 2-for-7.

The Barons' next game is Wednesday at 7:30 pm CST at Cedar Park Center against the Texas Stars.
