Tigers Fall in Shootout to Sharks, 2-1

WORCESTER, MA - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Worcester Sharks in a shootout Saturday night, falling by a score of 2-1. Dallas Jackson scored the lone Sound Tigers goal in the first period, but Sharks goaltender Troy Grosenick made key stops late to keep the game tied. Kenny Reiter made 37 saves but came away unlucky to be charged with a shootout loss.

The game opened with plenty of fisticuffs as there were three fights in the first 3:37 of play. First, Justin Johnson and Jimmy Bonneau dropped the gloves right off a faceoff in the Sound Tigers zone. The two went to the box, but on the ensuing faceoff, Brett Gallant and Matt Pelech did the same. About a minute later, Kirill Kabanov broke into the Sharks zone, but the play was whistled dead as Scott Mayfield and Eriah Hayes were tangled up behind the play.

Later in the period, the Sound Tigers opened the scoring on Jackson's second goal of the season. Jackson, who had two assists in Friday's game against Providence, snuck down from the right point, took a pass from Mike Cornell and redirected it past Grosenick to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the second period, as Reiter withstood nine Sharks shots on goal. Worcester went into the second intermission with a 22-11 advantage in shots. There were also some cooler heads in the second period, as it appeared the three fights earlier in the game were enough for both teams.

The Sharks evened the score early in the third on a blast from Taylor Doherty. The big defensemen took a pass at the right point, walked it to the middle and wound up for a huge drive that rang off the crossbar and down to tie the game at one with 15:13 left in the third period.

That was the last goal that either team would score, as both goaltenders stood on their heads throughout the third period and overtime. Reiter has made a combined 79 stops in the last two games.

The Sharks scored twice in the shootout, while the Sound Tigers were not able to beat Grosenick, who made three tremendous stops in overtime to keep the game alive.

The Sound Tigers return to action Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest against the St. John's IceCaps. The Bridgeport Rescue Mission and the Sound Tigers will be accepting new and gently-used coats for the Mission's Great ThanksGiving Project.
