Albany Devils News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY -- Tim Sestito, Stefan Matteau and Joe Whitney had multi-point showings, and the Albany Devils scored four times in the middle frame for a 5-3 victory against the Adirondack Phantoms at Glens Falls Civic Center Saturday. The Devils have picked up points in six of their last eight outings, improving to 11-7-0-1.
Joe Whitney opened the scoring, registering his eighth goal of the season and extending his point streak to six games. He was set up by Matteau and Sestito at 7:42 of the first period.
"We had a good start," Matteau said. "We had a slow start last night, but had a good third period. I think we just picked up where we left off."
Mike Hoeffel doubled the Devils lead 6:34 into the second period. Adirondack's Brandon Manning put the Phantoms on the board with a goal at 14:50 of the period.
Four goals were scored in the last 2:35 of the middle frame. Reid Boucher netted his eighth of the season, tying Whitney for team-best at 17:25. His power play goal was set up by Kelly Zajac and Jon Merrill. Matteau followed with his second point of the night and his third goal of the season at 18:18.
"I don't even remember it that much," Matteau said of his goal. "Sestito threw it out in front and I got the puck and kind of lost balance while shooting. I didn't even know it went in. It was just right place at the right time."
Phantoms Matt Mangene answered back 28 seconds later, making the score 4-2. Sestito responded with Albany's second power play goal of the game with :40 seconds left in the period.
In the third, Adirondack's Bruno Gervais scored to make the score 5-3.
Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves, improving his record to 4-4-0. The Devils outshot Adirondack 32-27 and are now 10-1-0-0 when scoring first, 5-0-0-0 when leading after the first period and 10-0-0-0 when leading after the second. Albany has tallied power-play goals in their last four games.
"It's a character win for us," Wedgewood said. "After last night, falling off our streak, we had to restart heading into today. We took two points out of here and two out of four this weekend. Moving into next week, keeping this streak going."
Next up, the Northway Rivalry returns to Times Union Center on Friday at 7 pm as the Devils and Phantoms faceoff for the fifth time this season. As part of SEFCU College Night, tickets are just $10 with a valid college ID, as well as $1 Hot Dogs, Sodas and a 21+ Happy Hour with $2 Domestic Drafts from 6-7 pm.
