Penguins Stun IceCaps with Big Third Period
November 23, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps surrendered five third period goals as they dropped the second of two games versus the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-2 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza Saturday night.
Leading 1-0 heading into the third, the IceCaps were unable to nail down their second straight victory as the Penguins dominated the final frame. Eric Hartzell made 29 saves in his first career AHL start while Tom Kostopoulos and Bobby Farnham had a goal and an assist each for the Penguins.
Eric O'Dell scored a pair of power play tallies with Brenden Kichton picking up helpers on both goals.
Kael Mouillierat appeared to pot the first goal of the game in the last minute of the opening period. After getting three cracks at the loose disc in the crease, Mouillierat found the back of the net but the goal was called back after the officials deemed the puck was kicked in.
After the teams traded power plays in the second, the IceCaps finally capitalized on their sixth man advantage on O'Dell's eighth of the season. Kichton's point blast caromed off Hartzell and right to O'Dell, who deposited the game's first goal to give St. John's a 1-0 lead at 10:08 of the middle frame.
On a power play of their own in the third, the Penguins drew even. Kostopoulos banged home a rebound past a sprawled Pasquale to make it a 1-1 game.
Just 29 seconds later, the Penguins took the lead on a similar play. After a scramble in front of the IceCaps net, Bobby Farnham slammed in his first of the season to give the home side a 2-1 advantage.
The IceCaps tied things at two at 13:57 of the third period on O'Dell's second power play tally of the night. O'Dell batted the puck out of the air and past Hartzell for the temporary equalizer.
Despite a huge penalty kill after JC Lipon picked up a five-minute major and a match penalty for a check to the head, the Penguins scored twice in 17 seconds to retake the lead for good. Andrew Ebbett wristed a shot from the top of the right circle behind Pasquale on a power play before Sill banked one off Pasquale and Ben Chiarot just 17 seconds later for a 4-2 lead.
Jason Megna added the empty-netter to seal the win.
