Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Houston Aeros met for the fifth and final time in Downtown Des Moines on Friday evening. Unable to continue his fortunes for a third consecutive AHL game, Goaltender Steve Silverthorn and the Iowa Stars dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Houston Aeros.
The Iowa Stars jumped-out to an early lead just 1:19 into the opening period. Forward Scott May registered his third goal of the season on the power-play after Houston's Ryan Stokes was whistled for an interference call :11 seconds into the game. The power-play goal was assisted by Marius Holtet and Mark Ardelan. Mattias Weinhandl evened the score at one at the 8:25 mark of the first period. The goal ended a franchise-long shutout streak by Iowa Goaltender Steve Silverthorn. Silverthorn posted shutouts in his previous two games and established a new shutout sequence of 128:25 over three games. Despite out-shooting Houston 20 to seven in the period, that was the lone goal of the period for Iowa. The 20 shots is also a new high-water mark for shots in a period.
Loaned to Iowa by Dallas prior to tonight's game, rookie Chris Conner was awarded Iowa's first penalty-shot opportunity of the season at 6:26 of the second period. Conner was denied by Houston Goaltender Josh Harding. Shortly thereafter, Houston's Benoit Pouliot gave the Aeros a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal. Iowa out-shot the Aeros 11 to seven, but were unable to solve Harding.
Peter Olvecky registered Houston's third and final goal of the game a quarter of the way into the third period. The power-play tally came at 6:12 into the third stanza.
The Stars Steve Silverthorn faced 22 shots in his first American Hockey League loss. He has allowed just three goals on 78 shots over those three contests, a .962 Save Percentage.
In his last three games against the Stars, Houston netminder Josh Harding has stopped 129 of 133 Iowa shots.
