Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights got two goals and an assist from Brandon Prust to knock off the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-0 on Friday at Van Andel Arena. The Griffins had won six straight games prior to the setback.
The two teams played a scoreless first period with the Knights enjoying a 10-9 shot advantage. That came in spite of three penalty kills for Omaha.
The Knights seized the lead in stunning fashion in the second period. First, Prust jammed in the rebound of a shot by David Van der Gulik at 1:10. It was the first goal allowed by the Griffins at home in 204:39.
Just 22 seconds later, the Knights led 2-0. Tim Ramholt walked down the slot looking for a backhand shot. The puck was poked off his stick, but it went right to Warren Peters who banged home his seventh goal of the season.
The Griffins took three consecutive minor penalties, and the Knights cashed in on the third. Andrei Taratukhin tipped in a shot by Tim Hambly from the point for his eleventh goal of the year.
The Knights kept the 3-0 lead thanks to Curtis McElhinney who made several tough saves among the 15 he made in the period.
McElhinney stopped 15 more in the third period, and Prust scored an empty net goal to finish off the shutout. It was the fifth for the Knights this season and the fourth for McElhinney.
The Knights are now 23-13-3-0. They earned back-to-back wins for the first time in 14 games.
Three Stars: 1. Curtis McElhinney (OMA) - 39 saves, shutout; Brandon Prust (OMA) - 2 goals, 1 assist; 3. Andrei Taratukhin (OMA) - 1 goal;
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights conclude the week on Saturday night when they return home to host the Houston Aeros at 7:00 p.m. The Knights also will welcome the Famous San Diego Chicken who will perform during the first and second intermissions and sign autographs.
Tickets for all Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' games are on sale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium box office Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets also are available through all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (402) 422-1212.
