Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators battled the Hershey Bears to a 0-0 stalemate through three periods and overtime, before falling in the shootout round to the defending Calder Cup champs at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Senators rode their penalty kill on Friday night, a unit that was a perfect nine for nine on the night. Netminder Kelly Guard turned in a top notch effort between the pipes, saving 39 shots for the B-Sens.
Guard had several spectacular saves, including one early in the second period against Alexandre Giroux. Giroux came slashing in from the left post, fainted left and then right right on Guard. The 23-year-old goalie recovered from the initial fake and made the save lying on his back, with his left hand stretched as far as it could possibly stretch.
The Bears had a 21-6 shot advantage through 27 minutes of play, but the B-Sens defense controlled the high-scoring Bears.
The Senators appeared to score what would have been the game-winner at the 14:21 mark of the third period. A loose puck flopped around in front of the Bears crease, as four Senators had swipes at it. The puck trickled into the net, but not before a whistle halting play.
Hershey was unable to capitalize on an Andy Hedlund high-sticking call at 18:45, as the B-Sens penalty kill once again rose to the challenge.
Kyle Wilson netted the game-winning shootout tally, as the Bears collected two shootout markers. Netminder Maxime Daigneault turned away all four B-Sens' attempts to secure the 1-0 victory for the Bears.
