Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas ¬" The Texas Stars, American Hockey League Affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars, split their weekend series with Iowa by rebounding with a 3-1 victory on Sunday night. Jake Oettinger turned in a 43 save performance to secure the win at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
Texas opened the scoring in the first period. Jordan Kawaguchi set up the opening goal taking the puck from the left corner and passing it to the hashmarks. Ryan Shea collected the pass and took a shot that deflected off Nick Caamano and went right into the net. The Stars held the lead all the way into the first intermission, killing three penalties along the way.
The Stars would never relinquish the lead in the game, as they extended the score to 2-0 halfway through the second period. On the teams first power play of the night, Curtis McKenzie passed the puck to Riley Damiani in the left circle. The reigning rookie of the year fired a shot off the post and into the net for his first of two on the night.
Less than one minute later Iowa tried to turn the tide in that game. Marco Rossi wrapped the puck around the net, scoring his first professional goal. However, the Wilds power play struggles haunted them as the team went 0-for-6 on the man advantage.
Damiani second of the night put the game out of reach. In the third period, during a 5-on-3 power play Damiani attempted to pass the puck across the crease but struck the pad of Dereck Baribeau and bounced into the net. The Stars finished the night 2-for-3 on the power play.
For the second straight night Oettinger was spectacular, stopping 43 of 44 shots in his first win of the season. In total this weekend he stopped 75 shots on 77 attempts. Baribeau suffered the loss despite making 28 saves.
The Stars hit the road next week to face the Tucson Roadrunners for a pair of games before returning home on Oct. 28.
