St. John's Maple Leafs Fight Cancer

The St. John's Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has teamed up with the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society to introduce "Leafs Fight Cancer" weekend.

This partnership will help provide cancer awareness and prevention, focusing on prostate and colorectal cancer. On the weekend of March 14th & 15th when the Maple Leafs host the Hamilton Bulldogs the club will be involved with a variety of events to help raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.

Friday, March 14-OZFM Music Night

· NHL Hall-of-Famer and 4-time Stanley Cup Champion, Guy Lafleur will be a part of an official puck drop launching the "Leafs Fight Cancer" weekend. Lafleur is a spokesman for Pfizer Canada promoting awareness across Canada regarding issues relating to men's health.

· Lafleur will also be available to sign autographs in Caps Pub during the first intermission.

· Silent Auction will take place around Mile One Stadium featuring St. John's and Toronto Maple Leaf items and other sports memorabilia.

· "Hats Off for Cancer" bins will be on the concourse for fans to donate any hats to the Canadian Cancer Society. Hats can also be purchased at Leafwear for a reduced price during this night.

· OZ-FM to provide pregame musical entertainment in Caps Pub and second intermission concert featuring Barry Canning.

Saturday, March 15-Rogers Cable Special Event Night

· Guy Lafleur will be providing opening remarks at a Public Forum on Men's Health on Saturday morning, March 15 from 9:00-11:00am in Lecture Theatre A in the Health Science Center. This forum is presented by Pfizer Canada.

· Presentation of Funds raised during the "Leafs Fight Cancer" Weekend.

· Silent Auction will take place around Mile One Stadium featuring St. John's and Toronto Maple Leaf items and other sports memorabilia.

· Hockey Day in Newfoundland featuring minor hockey groups across the province.

As well, Molson, the St. John's Maple Leafs platinum partner, will also be donating a portion of beer sales during the month of March to the Canadian Cancer Society on behalf of the Leafs Foundation.

Last season the St. John's Maple Leafs, through the Leafs Foundation, generously donated $10,000 to the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. This partnership received overwhelming support and attracted local, provincial, national and international media attention.

"Leafs Fight Cancer" is an initiative in conjunction with the NHL's "Hockey Fights Cancer" program which was launched in December 1998 in honor of hockey players and officials who have fought courageous battles against cancer. Since its inception more than $6 million has been raised to support cancer research and over $1 million of this has been donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
