Kopecky Named AHL Rookie of the Month

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Grand Rapids Griffins right wing Tomas Kopecky today was named the American Hockey League Rookie of the Month for February.

Although he missed two games due to injury, the native of Ilava, Slovakia, totaled four goals on the month, tied for second on the team with nine assists and 13 points in 11 games, and led all Griffins with a plus-10 rating.

Kopecky recorded an even or plus rating in all 11 games, and he concluded February with six-game assist and scoring (2-9-11) streaks. He celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring a goal in a 3-2 win at Utah on Feb. 5, and enjoyed a career-high three-assist night against the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks on Feb. 14, helping Grand Rapids to a 5-2 win. Kopecky also tallied assists on three of his team's game-winning goals, as the Griffins posted an 8-2-1-0 record with him in the lineup.

Detroit's second choice (38th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Kopecky now stands fifth overall on the Griffins and 17th among AHL rookies with 37 points (16-21-37) in 58 games. His plus-23 rating is tied for second among league rookies and ranks fourth on the Griffins.

Kopecky is the first Griffin to be honored with the AHL Rookie of the Month award.
