Squirrels Sweep Doubleheader over SeaWolves

The SeaWolves suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday night at UPMC Park by scores of 6-4 and 4-3.
GAME ONE
Richmond took the lead in the top of the third against Erie starter Tarik Skubal. With one out, Gio Brusa walked and Bryce Johnson singled putting runners on the corners. Johneshwy Fargas lifted a fly ball to right and on an error by Jose Azocar, Brusa scored for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Skubal walked Joey Bart to load the bases. Heliot Ramos drew a walk, scoring Johnson for a 2-0 lead. Skubal was lifted in favor of Wladimir Pinto. Pinto walked Jacob Heyward, plating Fargas for a 3-0 lead.
The SeaWolves responded in the home half of the fourth against Richmond starter Caleb Baragar. Jose Azocar led off with a single. With two outs, Daniel Pinero blasted a two-run home run, his 11th, to make it a two-run game.
Richmond added to the lead against Pinto in the fifth. Fargas led off with a walk and Jalen Miller belted a two-run home run to straight away center. Bart followed with a single and scored on a two-out base knock from Ryan Howard.
Erie attempted to rally in the home half of the sixth against Raffi Vizciano. Kade Scivicque blasted a solo home run with one out to cut the lead down to three runs. With tow outs, Pinero walked and moved into scoring position on a Kody Clemens single. Cam Gibson singled home Pinero making it 6-4. Erie would not get any closer.
Baragar (4-5) earned the win allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in five innings.
Skubal (2-3) took his second straight loss allowing three runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
GAME TWO
The Squirrels struck first in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Jose Fernandez. Johneshwy Fargas led off with a single and scored on a Jalen Miller double for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Ryan Howard led off with a double and moved to third when Zach Houchins reached on a Daniel Pinero error. Matt Winn followed Houchins and during his at-bat, popped up a ball that was dropped in foul territory, continuing the plate appearance. Winn followed with a two-run triple for a 3-0 lead. He scored on a one-out Fargas base hit for a 4-0 advantage.
Erie plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth against Squirrels starter Alfred Gutierrez. Cam Gibson homered with one out to make it a 4-1 game. Derek Hill followed with a single and Isaac Paredes brought Erie to within a run on a two-run home run. The blast for Paredes was his 12th.
Gutierrez (9-5) earned the win allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Squirrels reliever Rodolfo Martinez retired the final five Erie hitters following the Paredes long ball, earning his second save.
Fernandez (1-3) took the loss allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Joe Navilhon and Drew Carlton finished the game out of the Erie bullpen allowing just one hit over the final 3.2 innings.
The SeaWolves wrap up their home schedule on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Anthony Castro takes the mound for Erie against RHP Ryan Halstead (2-6, 3-53 ERA).
