Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - A pair of run-scoring doubles in the sixth inning lifted the Richmond Flying Squirrels over the Altoona Curve, 5-3, in a temper some contest Friday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Robbie Glendinning hammered a three-run homer that put the Curve (52-50, 17-18) ahead in the second but the Flying Squirrels (38-64, 15-20) plated four unanswered runs.

Zach Houchins led off the sixth inning for Richmond with a single off of Curve starter Sean Brady (Loss, 6-1). Jonah Arenado drove in Houchins with a double on the next pitch. Two batters later, Bryce Johnson tied the game with a run-scoring double of his own. Johnson later scored on a pinch hit single from Gio Brusa to complete the three-run, go-ahead frame. Richmond tacked on one more in the seventh after a lead-off double by Ryan Howard, moved up to third on a bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly to right.

Altoona had a prime chance in the home half of the inning. Chris Sharpe, Robbie Glendinning, and Arden Pabst all connected on singles with one out to load the bases for pinch hitter Brett Pope. Pope hit a grounder to second base that was fielded by Jalen Miller, who tagged out Pabst and threw to first to complete an inning-ending double play. Pabst was called safe originally and it scored two runs but the umpires overturned the call to a double play.

Richmond struck first in the second inning on a squeeze play. Johneshwy Fargas was hit by Curve starter Sean Brady (Loss, 3-9) to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Hamlet Marte. Richmond pitcher Caleb Baragar (Win, 3-3) laid down a bunt up the first base line as Fargas sped past the throw to the plate by Logan Hill, who fielded the bunt charging in from first base.

Baragar held the Curve hitless in four of his five innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and two strikeouts overall. Relievers Franko Rubio, Sam Moll and Caleb Simpson bridged the gap with three scoreless innings before Sam Wolff (Save, 3) closed out the win for Richmond in a shutout ninth.

Brady struck out six Flying Squirrels while without a walk in seven innings of work. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits while completing seven innings for the sixth time this year. Blake Cederlind fired two hitless innings in relief with three strikeouts but hit two batters to start the ninth.

Glendinning reached base all four times he came to the plate, finishing the night 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

The Curve and Flying Squirrels continue their four-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Right-hander Beau Sulser (7-1, 2.57) gets the ball for the Altoona opposite Richmond right-hander Alfred Gutierrez (6-4, 4.29).

Gates will open for fans at 5 p.m on Saturday. The game features a Seinfeld-themed Newman & Kramer dual bobblehead giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, presented by Nuts For You. It's also Scout Night and Friedrich's Ataxia Awareness Night.
