RubberDucks Rally Late to Beat Hartford

July 26, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Down to their final strike in the ninth inning, the Akron RubberDucks rallied for four runs, with right fielder Trenton Brooks' game-tying double and first baseman Nellie Rodriguez's go-ahead three-run double, for an 8-5 win - their first when trailing entering the ninth inning this season - over the Hartford Yard Goats at Dunkin' Donuts Park on Friday night.

Turning Point

With two outs and the bases empty in the ninth inning, Yard Goats right-hander Scott Griggs (1-1) walked second baseman Ernie Clement on four pitches, and third baseman Nolan Jones hit 2-2 pitch for a single to left field. Brooks then hit an 0-1 pitch to right field, scoring Clement. After an intentional walk to left fielder Connor Marabell, Rodriguez hit the first pitch down the left-field line, clearing the bases and giving Akron its first lead of the night.

Mound Presence

Akron left-hander Tanner Tully allowed a third-inning run on two hits and three more runs on four hits in the fourth inning, putting Hartford ahead, 4-0. He allowed a leadoff single in the sixth inning before departing for right-hander Jared Robinson (1-2), whose errant pickoff throw and wild pitch allowed the runner to score. Robinson walked two batters and struck out two in three hitless innings. Right-hander Dalbert Siri worked around two walks in a scoreless ninth inning. Hartford right-hander Brandon Gold yielded two earned runs in the first six innings. Right-hander Justin Lawrence allowed two seventh-inning runs, and Griggs had his first blown save, allowing four runs in the ninth inning.

Duck Tales

Akron trailed 4-0 entering the sixth inning, when Brooks hit a two-out double and Marabell hit a two-run home run. In the seventh inning, trailing 5-2, the RubberDucks trimmed the deficit, as designated hitter Mitch Longo walked, center fielder Alex Call and shortstop Alexis Pantoja each singled, and Clement hit a two-run double to make it 5-4. Right-hander Rayan Gonzalez entered to retire Jones and Brooks with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.
