Trenton Thunder News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Timely hitting backed a dominant start by Nick Nelson in a 2-1 Thunder win over the Erie SeaWolves at UPMC Park on Friday night.
Nelson (5-2) fanned eight batters across a season-high six and one-third innings, walking three and scattering three hits. His only run allowed came on a game-tying home run by Josh Lester leading off the bottom of the sixth inning.
After Nelson and Erie's Casey Mize dueled with three scoreless innings each, Mandy Alvarez put the Thunder on the board first with an RBI-double to right field off the glove of a leaping Derek Hall.
Lester's home run tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth, but the Thunder promptly retook the lead in the seventh against reliever Wladimir Pinto, as Alvarez doubled, took third on a fielding error by second baseman Kody Eaves and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Isiah Gilliam.
Trevor Lane took over in relief of Nelson with one out in the bottom of the seventh, stranding an inherited runner. Lane went on to toss a scoreless eighth to maintain the 2-1 lead.
Brooks Kriske encountered trouble in the ninth inning for the Thunder. Jose Azocar beat out a leadoff infield single and Kriske issued a four-pitch walk to Frank Schwindel. But after a mound visit, Daniel Pinero grounded into a 4-6-3 double play and Kriske struck out Eaves to end the game, stranding the tying run at third.
The win marked the first time this season the Thunder won the day after being swept in a doubleheader.
Chris Gittens went 1-for-4 with a single to extend his season-high on-base streak to 14 games, three shy of the team-high.
Your Thunder continue their road trip on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. against the SeaWolves. RHP Shawn Semple (Double-A debut) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Alex Faedo (5-6, 3.82) will go for Erie. Pregame coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on 920 AM The Jersey or online at TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
