Spitfires Beat the Firebirds 5-4 in OT

The Spitfires made it an exciting game in front of over 3200 fans at the WFCU Centre Friday evening. They were leading 3-0 and then found themselves trailing 4-3 late in the third before an exhilarating finish in OT.

In the first period, the Spitfires got off to a great start with Flint taking a few penalties in the period. Just 44 seconds into the game Flint threw the puck out of play and sent Windsor to the powerplay. Johnston fed the puck to Zito at the point who slid the puck across to Henault who fired it on goal and Cuylle tipped it into the net for an early Spitfires lead. Late in the period, the Spitfires were on the powerplay when Miedema sniped his 10th of the season from Currie and Abraham. The Spitfires lead 2-0 after twenty minutes of play and had a 15-6 shot advantage.

In the second period, each team traded a few chances. The Spitfires were able to extend their lead just over eight minutes into the period. Maggio passed it to Perrott who skated in a drew all the defenders out and find Johnston wide open on the back door who buried his 27th on the season. With under five minutes to play in the period Othmann cut into the Spitfires lead and put Flint on the board. The Spitfires had a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes and led in shots 26-15.

In the third period, Flint scored just 59 seconds into the period to make it a 3-2 game. Just over six minutes later Flint scored to tie the game. And just another 59 seconds after tying it Flint went ahead 4-3 with 11:45 left to play in the third period. The Spitfires had a 3-0 lead now found themselves trailing. Late in the third period the Spitfires pulled the goalie and called a timeout. With the net empty, the Spitfires Perrott shot low for a rebound and Zito on the doorstep buried it to tie the game with 26 seconds left in the period. We were headed to overtime.

In the overtime frame, both teams had chances. The Spitfires had a 2 on 1 but failed to capitalize and Flint went back the other way on a two on one and Renwick defended it well. Renwick got the puck and sent it up to a tired Johnston and Cuylle as they went on a 2 on 2 break, Johnston was poke checked but the puck came to Renwick trailing who fired it home and sent a sell out WFCU Centre home happy.

The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Saturday February 19th in Flint, puck drop scheduled for 7:00pm. The Spitfires are back home Monday for family day against the Saginaw Spirit, puck drop is scheduled for 2:05pm.
