North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Matvey Petrov scored 55 seconds into overtime to lift the North Bay Battalion to a 4-3 Ontario Hockey League victory Friday night over the Peterborough Petes, extending the Troops' winning streak to eight games.
Mitchell Russell had one goal and one assist and Owen Van Steensel and Kyle Jackson the other goals for the Battalion, which set a record for the longest winning streak in the franchise's North Bay era.
Goaltender Joe Vrbetic was outstanding in a 34-save performance as the Battalion improved its won-lost-extended record to 27-15-6 for 60 points, second in the Central Division.
The Battalion had won seven straight games from Dec. 13, 2018, through Jan. 3, 2019, for the longest such run since relocation in 2013. The franchise record is 16 consecutive wins, from Oct. 13 through Nov. 23, 2008, when the club was based in Brampton.
Tucker Robertson, Samuel Mayer and J.R. Avon scored for Peterborough, 16-26-3 for 35 points, fifth in the East Division. Goaltender Michael Simpson faced 23 shots.
Petrov collected his 29th goal of the season before 1,735 at Memorial Gardens after the provincial government increased permissible capacity to 50 percent. The Troops, whose last loss was a 3-0 road setback Jan. 28 to the Mississauga Steelheads, played their five previous home games in front of 500.
Petrov took a pass from Grayson Ladd and raced down the left wing to beat Simpson between the legs. Kyle McDonald also assisted.
Avon precipitated overtime with an unassisted goal, his 18th, at 6:01 of the third period, cruising across the goalmouth from the right side and holding onto the puck before slipping it behind the sprawling Vrbetic.
Jackson scored on the power play at 18:10 of the second period to give North Bay a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. The Battalion failed to score on a two-man advantage lasting 1:18 before Jackson collected his 17th goal on a ripper from the left circle before the second penalty expired. Russell and Ty Nelson had the assists.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the first intermission before Russell struck at 10:06 of the second frame, taking a pass from Nelson after a faceoff and firing the puck to Simpson's blocker side from between the hash marks.
Defenceman Mayer tied it on the power play at 12:14, drilling a screened shot from the mid blue line for his ninth goal.
Van Steensel opened the scoring at 5:00 of the first period with his seventh goal, taking a short pass from McDonald and snapping the puck to the far side from the right circle.
Robertson responded with his team-leading 26th goal at 13:56, putting the puck home from the slot off a feed from the right corner from Emmett Sproule. Chase Stillman had the other assist.
The Battalion visits the Ottawa 67's at 2 p.m. Sunday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700.
