Saginaw Spirit News Release
Guelph, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (16-27-1-0) were shutout for the third time this season by the Guelph Storm (22-16-3-1) by a 3-0 score Friday night in front of a sellout of 2,500 fans at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph.
The Spirit and the Storm played to a scoreless first period, which was good news for the Spirit after Guelph scored five goals in the opening period last Saturday night. Guelph had the pressure on early, as the Storm put the first six shots of the hockey game on Tristan Lennox. The New York Islanders prospect stood tall and afforded the Spirit the opportunity to score first, but Guelph's Owen Bennett stopped every Spirit surge. Shots favored the Storm 10-9 after the first period.
It was over half way through before the game saw it's first goal. Storm winger Matthew Papis streaked behind the Spirit defense and put a low shot past Lennox at 12:09 of the second period. Defenseman Cam Allen and Michael Buchinger picked up assists on Papis' 15th goal of the season. The Storm took that 1-0 lead into the final frame with Bennett stopping the Spirit's five shots on goal.
The Storm would extend their lead when they took advantage of a turnover in the Spirit zone. Matthew Poitras setup Braeden Bowman for his 17th goal of the season at 4:22 of the third. After serving a penalty, Saginaw's best chance of the game came on a Charlie Fink breakaway. His shot hit the left goal post and stayed out. Danny Zhilkin put the game away for the Storm at 12:23 with a pretty individual effort to score his 13th goal of the season. Zhilkin slid the puck past the Spirit back checker, and deked down Lennox with a move to the backhand. Cam Allen pick up his second assist of the game on the goal by Zhilkin. The bright spot for the Spirit tonight was their league-leading penalty kill was a perfect six-for-six.
The Spirit will host the Sarnia Sting on Saturday, Feb. 19 at The Dow Event Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
