Saginaw Spirit News Release
Windsor, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (16-29-1-0) dropped a 6-3 decision to the Windsor Spitfires (25-15-2-3) Monday afternoon in front of 3,283 at the WFCU Centre.
The Spirit were hoping to gain some momentum from a three-goal third period on Saturday night, but it was the Spits who came out strong on the Spirit. From the onset, the Spits were tenacious on the puck and Spirit netminder Tristan Lennox was under siege. It took the Spits until 8:53 to light the lamp when overager Daniel D'Amico scored his 12th goal of the season. Overage d-man Louka Henault picked up his first of three points on the afternoon with an assist. James Jodoin added another Spits goal before the end of the period, to make it 2-0 after one. Saginaw was outshot 13-2 in the opening period.
Windsor picked up where they left off in the second when Wyatt Johnston scored his 28th goal of the season on a pass that bounced off of a Spirit player and past Lennox. Windsor extended their lead to 4-0 on a goal from Henault at 15:34. Finally, the Spirit made the most of a power play opportunity when Mitchell Smith scored on the backhand from Josh Bloom and Matyas Sapovaliv at 18:46 to cut the lead to 4-1.
Windsor again started the third strong with their fifth goal from Pasquale Zito just 30 seconds into the period. Alex Christopoulos made it 6-1 at 2:36. Late in the game, Will Cuylle received a 5:00 penalty and Saginaw filled the net twice, the first coming from Matyas Sapovaliv (12) on a five-on-three situation and the second from Dalton Duhart (9). That was a close as the Spirit would get this afternoon, falling to the Spitfires, 6-3.
Next for the Spirit is two home games this Friday and Saturday night against the Erie Otters for Ice Blast Weekend. Puck drop for both games is 7:05 p.m. at The Dow Event Center.
