State College Spikes News Release
GRANVILLE, WV - The State College Spikes saw their three-game winning streak and four-game string of wins on the road both go by the boards as the West Virginia Black Bears took a 7-3 decision on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Jose Godoy was the lone Spikes (13-13) player with multiple hits as the Spikes were held to just six hits on the evening. Godoy's second-inning double led to the first State College run, as he scored on R.J. Dennard's single two batters later.
West Virginia (11-15) took control of the game after that, starting with Kevin Newman's two-run homer in the third. It was the first professional home run for Newman, the first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015.
The Black Bears broke the game open in the fifth as Christian Kelly produced an RBI single and Ty Moore knocked in two runs with a single of his own.
The Spikes would mount a token rally in the seventh inning when Leobaldo Pina doubled and came in to score on a groundout by Elier Rodriguez, and another in the ninth when Rodriguez brought in Cole Lankford with a sacrifice fly. However, West Virginia also tallied single runs in the seventh and eighth to keep State College at bay.
Dailyn Martinez (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks over four innings. Martinez also balked once, but struck out four in the effort.
West Virginia starter Dario Agrazal (3-1) put together a solid outing for the victory. Agrazal yielded one run on three hits while striking out seven batters. The right-hander also set down 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
Six players produced multiple hits for the Black Bears, led by Moore's three hits and two runs batted in. Casey Hughston added a double to the West Virginia cause.
The Spikes will seek to start a new winning streak on Saturday as they welcome the Batavia Muckdogs to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a 7:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send right-hander Juan Perez (2-1) to the mound for the opener of the three-game set. Batavia will go with left-hander Brett Lilek (0-1) on the hill.
