STATEN ISLAND, NY - July 17, 2015 -On what was dubbed #BeatBKLYN Night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Staten Island, it was the Cyclones that were victorious as they downed the Yankees by the score of 4-3 to snap their four game losing streak. The Brooklyn bullpen continued their early season dominance, tossing 4.1 shutout innings of relief to lower their ERA during the month of July to a miniscule 0.77 (four ER / 46.2 IP).

With their offense sputtering of late, the Cyclones got creative on the base paths to snap out of their scoreless drought and take an early lead. David Thompson started the top of the second with an opposite field single and a stolen base to put himself into scoring position with one out. Zach Mathieu followed with a line drive single to right field that was hit too hard for Thompson to try and score, but instead put runners on the corners. That brought Hengelbert Rojas to the plate in his first at-bat since joining the Cyclones on Thursday. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Mathieu broke for second base and when the Yankees threw down, Thompson broke for home sliding in safely to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.

The lead would swell to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, this time in a more conventional way. Thompson worked a two-out walk and came around to score when Jeff Diehl sent a 2-0 offering over the batter's eye in centerfield for a mammoth two-run blast.

Brooklyn pushed their advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fifth after Hengelbert Rojas started the frame with a leadoff double and came around to score just a few pitches later when Manuel Hilario stroked a single through the right side for his second RBI of the season.

The four-run lead seemed like more than enough, as Brooklyn starter Kevin Canelon cruised through the first four innings, but quickly found himself in trouble in the bottom of the fifth. After retiring Drew Bridges for the first out of the frame, the southpaw allowed three straight hits, including a pair of doubles, which led to Staten Island's first run of the game. Canelon then got Junior Valera on an RBI groundout for out number two and seemed like he might be able to avoid further damage but Zack Zehner ripped an RBI double down the left field line to plate Brandon Wagner and trim the Brooklyn advantage to 4-3. After the lefthander hit Thairo Estrada to put a pair of runners aboard, Craig Missigman (1-0) was summoned from the bullpen and needed just one pitch to retire Jhalan Jackson and escape the inning with Brooklyn still ahead 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Missigman found himself in another tough spot, but was able to wiggle out of a bases loaded, one-out jam thanks to back-to-back strikeouts of Brandon Wagner and Junior Valera and kept Brooklyn ahead.

Missgman handed the ball off to Corey Taylor and P.J. Conlon, who each tossed uneventful 1-2-3 frames to set up Alex Palsha for the ninth. The Brooklyn closer allowed a one-out single to Wagner, who was promptly lifted for pinch runner Jeff Hendrix. Hendrix swiped second on strike three to Valera to put the tying run in scoring position with two-outs. He would be stranded there however, as Palsha made quick work of Zack Zehner to close out his sixth save of the season.

The Cyclones return to MCU Park on Saturday to open a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters. RHP Tyler Badamo will be on the mound for Brooklyn looking to build on this evening's victory. The team will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the classic television show "The Honeymooners" with a Bus Driver Sandy Bobblehead courtesy of MCU. There will also be post-game fireworks.
