State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Dailyn Martinez contributed another quality start on the mound for the State College Spikes, and a four-run fourth inning helped keep the Spikes within a half-game of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead as they defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-3, on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Spikes (25-24) are now tied with Brooklyn and West Virginia for third place in the NYPL Wild Card race, with Connecticut in first by a percentage point over Lowell.

Martinez (3-3) tossed six innings and allowed three runs for his third straight quality outing with State College. The right-hander yielded nine hits and three walks, but struck out three for the win.

State College helped bolster their starter's efforts with the big fourth inning, loading the bases twice in the frame. Ronnierd Garcia broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single, with Jose Godoy producing a sacrifice fly one batter later. Mike Pritchard then brought in two runs with a double to complete the Spikes' scoring.

The Scrappers (22-26) scratched out a run in the fourth with Silento Syles's RBI groundout, then added another in the fifth with a Mark Mathias sacrifice fly. In the sixth inning, Jack Goihl singled in another run, but Mahoning Valley was held without a baserunner over the last three innings.

Tyler Bray set down six straight batters in relief for the Spikes, two via strikeout, before Pedro Echemendia (7) recorded three groundouts in a perfect ninth for the save.

Mahoning Valley starter Leandro Linares (0-5) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings. Linares struck out two batters on the night.

Pritchard was the lone Spike with multiple hits on the night, and added a stolen base.

Spikes hitters were also patient at the plate, drawing 10 walks on the evening.

The Spikes will finish their three-game homestand against the Scrappers with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Juan Perez (4-2), who on Saturday was named to South squad for the NYPL All-Star Game, to the mound.
