Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Spikes (24-24) continue to have their way with the Scrappers (22-26) after a 5-3 win on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in State College.

The Spikes jumped all over Scrappers starter Leandro Linares (0-5), but had help from the Scrappers' command issues again. The Scrappers walked 10 batters, and all came in the first five and two-thirds innings of the game. Linares walked four. He lasted three and one-third innings while allowing four runs on four hits. Cortland Cox wasn't his usual self. Cox walked three, and allowed one hit on one run. He went two thirds of an inning.

Jose Zapata tends to struggle with his command, but always finds a way to get out of it. He walked three in one and two-thirds innings, but did not give up a hit, nor did he allow a run.

In the fourth, Casey Grayson walked to lead it off. Jhohan Acevedo singled. Grayson later scored on a Ronnierd Garcia single to center. Acevedo scored when Jose Godoy hit a sacrifice fly to center.

In came Cox in the middle of the inning. Cole Lankford was out at home on a throw from Juan De La Cruz. That saved a run. Mike Pritchard then doubled to right to score Garcia and Elier Rodriguez.

Mahoning Valley grabbed a run in the top of the fifth when Jack Goihl scored on a sacrifice fly from Mark Mathias. Goihl collected his first professional multi-hit game.

The Scrappers got one in the top of the sixth when Silento Sayles scored on a Goihl single.

Dailyn Martinez (3-3) was strong for the Spikes, but did allow nine hits. Martinez went six innings and allowed three runs. Pedro Echimendia earned his seventh save of the season.

The Spikes are 4-0 against the Scrappers this season, and look for a series sweep on Tuesday night at 7:05. Shao-Ching Chiang takes the ball for the Scrappers against Juan Perez.
