
Connecticut Swings Way to Win over Auburn

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (25-23) swung their way to a 10-5 victory over the Auburn Doubledays (23-26) on Monday night. It took seven tries but Connecticut who has won six of eight is finally two games above .500 for the first time this season.
After falling behind 4-1 the Tigers put up crooked figures in three straight innings. In the fifth against Auburn starter Matthew Crownover the Tigers scored two runs to get within one. Catcher Shane Zeile (2-4, 2 2B, RBI, R) doubled home right fielder Joey Havrilak (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) after he singled to start the inning. A few batters later centerfielder Victor Padron scored Zeile with a base hit.
In the sixth and with Connor Overton (1-1) on the mound Connecticut took the lead for good. With first basemen Will Allen (2-4, 2 R, RBI) on at first Joey Havrilak hit his second home run of the year giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead. Zeile then doubled and scored on a triple by third basemen Steven Fuentes. For Fuentes it was just his seventh hit of the year but his third triple and 10th RBI.
In the seventh inning with Kevin Mooney now in the Tigers broke it open thanks to four straight hits to begin the inning. Second basemen Pat Mackenzie singled and then shortstop AJ Simcox (3-5, 2 RBI, 2B), Allen and designated hitter Corey Baptist all doubled. By the time the smoke had cleared following a single by leftfielder Jacob Kapstein (2-4, RBI) it was 10-4 Connecticut.
The Tigers had seven extra base hits on the night with five doubles, a triple and a home run. They fell one shy of their season high in hits with 16 and all nine players collected at least one hit.
Tyler Alexander started the game for Connecticut and allowed one run in three innings on four hits. Alexander struck out one and walked one. Josh Heddinger (2-0) came on in relief working five innings while allowing three runs, one earned. He did walk one and hit two batters in an outing where he struck out one.
It was a struggle for Auburn pitching all night long. Starter Matthew Crownover after retiring nine straight at one point surrendered five hits and three runs all earned in four and two thirds innings. The loser on this night was Conner Overton and he was tagged for three runs on four hits in just an inning and a third. Kevin Mooney allowed another four runs and five hits in just one inning of work.
Connecticut will play the final game of the three game series at home against Auburn on Tuesday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
