The Brooklyn Cyclones (25-24) blanked the Staten Island Yankees (25-23) by a score of 7-0 on Monday evening.
Cyclones starting pitcher Gaby Almonte (W, 6-3) pitched a gem, going eight innings, allowing only two hits, no runs, two walks, and striking out seven.
Brooklyn scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. David Thompson led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a single by Hengelbert Rojas, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Cyclones would add on another two runs in the third inning. Centerfielder Tucker Tharp hit a shallow single to right and scored on Vincent Siena's sixth double of the season. Jeff Diehl would drive home Siena later in the inning with an RBI single.
Another two runs would cross the plate for the Cyclones in the fifth inning to make this a blowout. Tharp led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second because of an errant pickoff throw, move to third on a Siena single to left field and scored on Thompson's sacrifice fly to left field. One batter later, Diehl would drive home Siena on a base knock to make it a five-run game.
Brooklyn would add another insurance run in the seventh inning. Michael Bernal reached on Kyle Holder's seventh error of the season and scored when Thompson doubled to left field.
The Cyclones would score their seventh and final run in the top of the eighth. Alfredo Reyes recorded a triple to start off the inning. After Tharp and Siena walked to load the bases, Enmanuel Zabala was hit by a pitch to allow Reyes to score.
Yoel Espinal (L, 1-5) really struggled on Monday Night. He lasted only four innings giving up six hits, five earned runs, two walks, while striking out six. Will Carter relieved Espinal and went two innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run, walking one, and striking out three. Andre Del Bosque finished the game for the Yankees, pitching three innings of one-run ball.
The Yankees and Cyclones will finish their three game series on Tuesday, Aug. 11, in Brooklyn. The Baby Bombers return to Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Wednesday to face the Williamsport Crosscutters.
