Lowell Spinners News Release
TROY, NY - Brandon Magee hit his first professional homerun and knocked in three runs, while Matt Kent was stellar once again in middle relief as the Lowell Spinners rebounded from a tough loss the night before with an impressive 7-4 victory over Tri-City on Monday night.
With the win, the Spinners stayed tied for the wild-card lead along with Connecticut and West Virginia and climbed to within two games of Tri-City in the Stedler Division.
For the second night in a row, Lowell (26-24) jumped ahead early, this time courtesy of the long ball, as Andrew Benintendi smacked his fifth homerun of the season over the centerfield wall.
However, that lead was short-lived, as Tri-City (28-22) batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs before an out was recorded and totaling four in the inning, aiding by a wild pitch by Spinner starter Jose Almonte and a two-base error committed by Magee.
Magee then redeemed himself in the fifth inning, crushing his first homerun of the season over the right field wall. After an out, Chad De La Guerra and Benintendi drew back-to-back walks, and Victor Acosta cut the lead to just one with an opposite-field single.
The floodgates opened for the Spinners in the sixth, as the team took the lead with four runs on a two-run throwing error by relief pitcher Adam Whitt on a Jhon Nunez sacrifice bunt attempt and a two-run double by Magee that skipped into the left field corner. De La Guerra added his team-leading 10th double to plate Magee and extend the lead to a comfortable margin.
Lowell starter Almonte, after a rocky first inning, did not allow a hit in in his next three innings of work. He struck out four but walked four, allowing four runs on just three hits. Kent (5-0, 1.06) came on after Almonte and proceeded to shut down the ValleyCats offense, allowing just three hits in three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking one. His fifth win out of the bullpen leads the team. In his last six appearances totaling 20.2 innings, Kent has allowed just one earned run. Trevor Kelley picked up his first save, ending a Tri-City rally in the eighth and setting the ValleyCats down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Magee and Mitch Gunsolus had two hits each to lead the team with Magee adding two stolen bases as well. With Magee and Benintendi's homeruns, the team increased its total on the year to 24, good for third in the New York Penn League behind division mates Tri-City and Vermont.
Dioscar Romero (2-3, 4.84) will be on the mound for the rubber game of the three-game set tomorrow during a Camp Day game for Tri-City, with first pitch scheduled bright and early at 11 am.
